NEED COORDINATOR FOR HABITAT PROJECT
"We are nearing the groundbreaking for the Habitat house in Leeton,"
reports Mary Solomon, "but are missing a crucial part of the team. We do not at this time have a Volunteer Coordinator."
This individual keeps the applications the volunteers fill out and the time logs from each week's build.
He/she works with the Construction Manager and Food Coordinator who are already in place. According to Mary, "The last
Volunteer Coordinator kept a data base of volunteers' names and email addresses and notified people about the work
schedule and other pertinent information. Thus, computer skills are helpful."
Chuck Cousins, board member who lives in Leeton, needs some help in finding someone. If you know
of anyone at all who might be interested, please let either Chuck or Mary Solomon know as soon as possible. Once they
are identified Teresa Pearce and Mary Solomon will meet with the individual to help them get started in the organization
of the position.
KATY TRAIL MAKING ITS WAY HERE
Will we be ready?
To see what small towns along the 265 mile stretch of trail are doing
check the article farther down this page with pictures of Rocheport. It is a town of 208 and is doing very well. Might
do well for us to think about what they are doing and what we could be doing once the trail goes thru Leeton.
FOOTBALL SEASON BEGINS
The 8-man Football Season began last Friday night for the Chilhowee
& Leeton Football Team with a game against Missouri's sixth ranked team in the state, the Dekalb High School Tigers.
Always a tough team for opponents, Dekalb was a big challenge for the young program locally to take on the very first
game of the year. Despite that fact the "Chili-Dogs" as they have become known were eager to get on the field and play.
Possibly a little too eager or nervous jitters but the opening half was not a good one for the local team
having four fumbles and finding themselves quickly down 38-8 at halftime. Buckling down and returning to the field more
determined the team began chipping away at the lead and did an impressive job of holding Dekalb to only sixteen points
while scoring five touchdowns of their own. Final score was Dekalb 54 Chilhowee/Leeton 42.
In the game Leeton's Derrick Stoneking rushed 19 times for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Chilhowee
senior Cody Schumacher had 14 tackles and forced a fumble in an excellent game while teammate Colter Armstrong had 72 yards on
the ground and 78 in the air. Derrick Stoneking also threw a touchdown pass, had 11 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble on
an all-round great performance for the night.
Next game the team will be traveling Thursday night, September 2, to meet the Mustangs of Northwest
Hughesville High School. Game time is 7 p.m.
August 27: DeKalb 54 - Chilhowee/Leeton 42
September 2 - Hughesville
September 10 - Stewartsville
September 17 - St. Josesph
September 24 - Fairfax
October 1 - Miami-Amoret
October 15 - Norborne
October 22 - Hardin-Central
October 29 - Hughesville

EARLYS HONORED
The tradition of Alvin Crooks and family continues with additional awards
presented to the granddaughters at the 37th Annual Ag Appreciation Dinner at the Clinton Community Center on August 23.
Receiving the Ag Scholarship from Henry County Chamber of Commerce was Brittany Early and Kylie Dickett. Receiving
"Reserve Grand Champion Steer" was owner Mallory Early and the 1232 pound steer was purchased by Mike Keith Insurance
for $3,696.00.
In other purchases at the annual 4-H & FFA Livestock and Ham Sale, Taylor Crooks (another granddaughter)
sold her 1248 pound steer for $3,744 to the Hawthorn Bank of Clinton. Kennedy Early sold her 1158 pound steer to Jim
Falk Motors for $3,763. The steers had already won top awards in the judging. Congratulations to the family for continued
success in livestock production.
At the Missouri State Fair, Brittany Early, Mallory Early, Kennedy Early and Taylor Crooks all won individual
showmanship awards in the beef divisions.
LHS SOFTBALL TEAM STARTS
The Leeton High School girls softball team has started their season
with some good play currently holding a 2-4 record. In their opening game they met a perennial tough team in Adrian and lost
9-4. Coach Trisha Shackelford reported that not having any seniors this year makes it tough in those early games when
experience is essential.
In the second game against Archie, Leeton came out winners 14-7 in a very impressive game. Megan
Uptegrove was the winning pitcher and helped her cause going 2 for 3 at the plate. Mallory Early was 2 for 4 and Courtney
Fleming 3 for 5 getting a double and two singles.
Over the weekend the girls were in the Humansville Tournament and came away with sixth place. They
lost to Stockton and Halfway but ended the tournament with a win over Dadeville. Monday night they played at Knob Noster
and came away with a stinging 16-5 loss. Play will continue as the season progesses. We can be sure this young team will
get better and provide some exciting softball.
NEW COOKBOOK IN THE WORKS
Need Donations of Great Recipes
The Board of Directors of the Mineral Creek Historical Society are
going all out this year to get the rewiring, air conditioning and heating at the museum. They want that building open
with volunteers able to be in the building with comfortable temperatures. They are also wanting to be sure that the
display items that have been entrusted to them are properly cared for and maintained at a steady temperature which
is very important to preserving them for years to come.
The board voted to prepare another cookbook on the order of the first one that featured lots of pictures
of the town over the years. It was a fun volume to look at with some great recipes in easy to read print. The
same will be true this time except the pictures are going to be a collection of various events that have taken place
in Leeton or related to Leeton over the past year. We are going to go July 2009, to July 2010. If you have pictures
of events like the Leeton Fair, Lion's Club's High School Senior baseball game, Homecoming crowning at LHS, football
games for the Chilhowee-Leeton football team, Leeton Alumni Reunion or anything else related to Leeton over the past
year please contact Bob Wyatt so that he can include them in the new cookbook.
The board believes the town will be amazed at all the many things that took place in Leeton this past year
and will be proud to be a part of the Leeton community. The National Stock Dog Trails, High Senior Baseball Tourney,
All-State Show Me Drama & Music Team, the Cultural Exchange, the Leeton Fair, Leeton Festival, and a host of events.
Help the board by providing pictures and recipes for this unique book.
Give your contributions for the book to any of the board members: Stephanie Ritter, Barbra Combs,
John Beck, Bob Wyatt, Mike Myers or Patty Cox and they will be sure to include them in the 2010 Yearbook/Cookbook.
Advance orders for the book are also being taken. Cost is $15 for the book that will be about the same size as the
first one at $5 less. If needing to be mailed add $5 for packaging and shipping.
CHRISTIAN CHURCH YOUTH TO MEET
The Christian Church youth will be meeting at the church after Sunday
services September 12 and going to Windsor for the afternoon on a youth journey. Charlie and Melinda Fitzgerel will be hosting
the young people for pizza, fun and games. Students will return to the church by 4 p.m. The young people wanting to go on
this outing will need to bring $6 for expenses. The group will be given various opportunities for fun as the Jr. High thru

TRAVEL CORNER
KATY TRAIL CELEBRATES 20

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year is the Katy Trail, a most unique
state park that no other state has to offer. The trail is the former railroad tracks of the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas
railroad or as most called it the "Katy." This trail of 265 miles has been cleared and cleaned and provides a great path
for runners/joggers/bicyclers to enjoy the outdoors for miles. The location of towns along the way provide opportunities
for sightseeing, shopping, and entertainment. It attracts some 300,000 outdoor enthusiasts every year and provides a wide
assortment of scenery as a person bicycles the distance. It includes forests, wetlands, valleys, pastures, and gently
rolling farm fields. The autumn will soon be providing breathtaking views of the colored leaves just as the spring provides
a look at the wonderful blooming plants, shrubs and trees found in Missouri.
Below is shown the city hall (former depot) for Rocheport, a town of 208 according to the population
sign. Here too is the shelterhouse with a large display of the history of the community, a map of the route of the Katy
Trail and other beneficial information. A nice water fountain is provided along with restrooms.

In this picture below there are bicyclers
getting ready to hit the trail. There were about 200 people coming and going when I visited early Saturday morning. I was
amazed at how many were already on the trails going by from other stops. The parking lot was nearly full of vehicles
where people had unloaded their bikes and hit the trail.

Other pictures show some of the businesses including the bike repair
and rental shop, an outdoor cafe, and the photographer's studio. Souvenir shops and flea markets and first class
antique stores fill the one block downtown along with a couple more restaurants. Prices were very reasonable. To rent
a regular adult bicycle it was $7 an hour. There is a wide variety of bikes available for all age groups including
3-wheelers with a child's seat to ride with the adult.

The similarity to Leeton is rather interesting as demonstrated by the
pictures provided. Despite being smaller than Leeton, Rocheport has more businesses and two active churches. Another church
closed its doors and the community converted the building into the community building. The top picture is the Methodist
Church, the second is the Christian Church and the other is the community building/former church building.

Another attractive and charming part of the town is their Bed
& Breakfasts. Their larger old homes have been converted into these special places to stay. I saw many loading up to leave
after a night's stay. From the smiles and good natured laughing and waving the visitors had obviously had an enjoyable
time. The next pictures show the former school which has also been converted into a unique and interesting Bed &
Breakfast. The community has worked hard to preserve the appearance of the town from the early years.

The first section of the Katy Trail state park was opened in 1990 and
since then new sections have been added until in the near future a person will be able to bicycle from St. Louis to
Kansas City using the trail. That will include the section that will go thru Leeton. The section from Windsor to
Pleasant Hill is being cleared and hopefully in the near future visitors will be bicylcing thru the Leeton community.
Some of the ideas we can see working in some of these other communities should be considered here as the time approaches
when the tourists will start passing thru.

The final two pictures are of another Bed & Breakfast and one of the unique shops providing special gift items
that can be purchased right out of the home where the people live. Leeton can start planning now for when the daily
travelers will come bicycling thru and if the tourists see a clean, unique, step back in time perhaps with the appearance
of our community they may come back with others to shop here at the various restaurants and shops. For more information check
www.mostateparks.com.
If you start the St. Louis end and work your way back to Leeton it will be as follows with the total
miles traveled in brackets after the town. The beginning is in Edward "Ted" and Pat Jones Confluence Point State Park. It
passes thru Machens on the way to Black Walnut (30 miles) to St. Charles (39.5) to Greens Bottom (4.57) to Weldon Spring
(56) to Defiance (59.1) to Matson (60.6) to Augusta (66.3) to Dutzow (74) to Marthasville (77.7) to Peers (81.2) to Treloar
(84.7) to Bernheimer (89) to Gore (93.8) to Case (96.9) to McKittrick (100.8) to Rhineland (105) to Bluffton (110.9) to
Portland (115.9) to Steedman (121.4) to Mokane (125) to Tebbetts (131.2) to Wainwright (137.6) to Jefferson City (143.2)
to Claysville (149.8) to Hartsburg (153.6) to Wilton (157.4) to Easley (162.5) to Providence (165.5) to McBaine (169.5) to
Huntsdale (171.7) to Rocheport (178.3) to New Franklin (188.2) to Franklin (189) to Boonville (191.8) to Pilot Grove (203.3)
to Pleasant Green to Clifton City (215.4) to Beaman to Sedalia (229.9) to Camp Branch (236) to Green Ridge (239.3) to
Bryson (243.8) to Windsor (248) to Calhoun (255.2) to Lewis (259.5) to Clinton (264.6). With the new addition instead of
going to Clinton the Trail will go from Windsor to Leeton to Chilhowee on to Pleasant Hill.
MUSEUM MOMENT
A Look Back at the 1951 Seniors
For the 2011 Seniors
This is the time that seniors start thinking about graduating. They suddenly
realize it is their last year of public school. This means they are the old students. Some try to show they have grown into
tough leaders and torment the younger students. Some try to set an example of how mature they are. Others just let loose,
relax and have fun. Then there are some who continue to stumble thru the halls wondering where their first class is.
This is a look back sixty years to the Seniors of the year 1951. The pictures below are compliments of
Ruth (Miller) Minor, a member of the outstanding group of young people. This class went on to be successful in many
fields. Here they are in pictures with all the enthusiasm and youthful energy.

Also of interest in the materials that Ruth sent were two cheerleading books made to hand out to the
crowd so that they could cheer along with the team. Here are some of the yells from those books.
1. Make a basket! Raise that score!
Come on boys! We want more!
2. I think we can, I think we can
I think we can -- we must!
I know we will, I know we will
Beat _______ or bust!
3. Look at our boys, see 'em fight!
Come on boys, do it right!
4. We can beat _____! Cause we can play ball!
Three cheers for Leeton, Rah! Rah! Rah!
5. Haystacks, smokestacks, Bulldogs after rabbits,
We've got a team, that has good habits.
6. Apple carts, orange crates, pineap-ple sauce,
Come on boys, show 'em whose boss!
7. Hop-a-long Cassidy shoots 'em down twice!
When our boys shoot a basket, they make it look nice!
8. Peanuts, popcorn, chewing gum, candy!
We think our boys play just dandy!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
"THE BEST TRANSLATION"
This is a story about four ministers who were discussing the merits
of the various translations of the Bible. One liked the King James Version because of its classically beautiful English.
Another liked the American Standard Version best because it is more literal and comes nearer to the original Hebrew and
Greek. Still another liked a more modern translation best because of its up-to-date vocabulary.
The fourth minister was silent. When asked to express his opinion, he replied, "I like my mother's
translation best." The othe three expressed surprise. They didn't know that his mother had translated the Bible. "Yes,
she did," he replied. "She translated it into life, and it was the most convincing translation I ever saw."
This is the translation that best pleases God!

"CHRISTMAS IN SASSAFRAS SPRINGS"
Available at Jodie's
The latest book by Bob Wyatt has been released in the area now
and is available at Jodie's Restaurant. Price is $15. The book is entitled "Christmas in Sassafras Springs" and is the
2nd in the Bachelor Preacher Mystery Series. The book features the high school band director and his battle with the ACLU
which is sure the school Christmas program will include the Nativity scene and the Preacher's Alliance which is convinced
there will be no mention of Christ. Add to this the attempt of a former football coach to have the director fired because
the band program is getting too big for his liking and you have a mystery to the end of whether there will be a Christmas
program and what will be in it. Be sure to pick up your copy today.

Also available at Jodie's is the last of the Leeton Cookbooks.
They are $20 and all money goes to the museum. The 1st book in the Bachelor Preacher Mystery Series is available there as well. It is
"The Spirited Festival" and is about a widow lady that is the church secretary who hears a noise in the church building
and (thanks to gossip blowing it out of proportion) the people think the church is haunted. Read how they work thru
the situation to find what is causing the noise. The series is humorous and the mysteries hold you to the end. Buy one
